The very first CATEECHEE FEST: Honoroing our Native American Heritage will be held on Saturday, May 15th from 10am – 4pm. This event is sponsored by the town of Ninety Six and in coordination with the Old 96 District Model A Ford Club.
CATEECHEE FEST will consist of many art, cultural, historical, musical, educational and heritage events throughout the day! Our historic roots run deep and began with the Native Americans. Here are just a few of the events:
From 10am – 2pm:
- Native American dancers, drummers, performers, story tellers and flute players will be performing on the square in Downtown 96
- Jewelry, food and craft vendors will set up on the square in Historic Downtown 96
- Local authors, visual artists, potters, painters, photographers, musicians will be set up in the Historic 96 Depot
- A ‘Cateechee’ costume contest will be held (for young ladies-all ages). Each young lady will be judged on their Native American costume and appearance (ribbons will be awarded in 5 age categories). One overall CATEECHEE will be chosen to represent 96 throughout the year and will ride as Cateechee in the July Festival of Stars and the 96 Christmas parade(s). Other appearances may include activities/events in and around Greenwood County***
- A ‘young brave’ costume contest will also be held for the guys (all ages)-ribbons will be awarded
- A tee-pee and/or thatched hut contest will be held and all schools in the State of South Carolina will be invited to participate (ribbons will be awarded)
- A Native American ’coloring’ page (possible drawings: tee-pee’s, tomahawk, feathers, etc) will also be sent to local schools for students to decorate for a contest. Artwork will be displayed throughout the town’s businesses/buildings. Ribbons will be awarded.
Early in the morning, the Model A club will meet in the area of Keowee, SC and drive the legendary route that Cateechee rode on horseback! They do this in celebration of their 7 year anniversary (of their club’s formation) as well as in support of tourism for the historic 96 district.
At 2:30pm, all vendors in town will be asked to close their booths and when the Model A Club rolls into town, all who wish, will depart in a motor parade (at 3pm) and will drive from the town of 96 to the Star Fort! Activities will end at 4pm.
Booths will be $38 for each craft vendor/artist and $96 for food vendors.
